Kool- Aid Sour Sensations Design Project

This Kool-Aid Sour Sensations packaging design project was a great journey not only form the concept but to the completion of my final design. This project aimed at introducing a new sour flavor called Pineapple Pucker which I came up with for my Kool-Aid Sours flavor.
My first initial step to get started with my design process was conducting research into the existing Kool-Aid products and the packaging trends. Conducting research helped me identify a unique opportunity for a sour pineapple flavor to add to the Kool-Aids flavors. My initial research laid the groundwork for my creative process which followed where I came up with the choice of Pineapple Pucker flavor became a pivotal inspiration for my design’s direction.
The next steps I took within my design process was drawing from the vibrant personality of Kool-Aid then adding the tangy essence of Pineapple Pucker. For myself to visualize what I wanted to start designing I dove into sketching initial designs. I focused on the color schemes that reflected the sour yet enticing nature of this new flavor. Next, I experimented with different type faces to see which one best went with the Kool-Aid brand. Which I choose Source Serif Variable because after going back to my research looking at the Kool-Aid branding type, they use know I wanted it to matchup or look like the branding now. Sans Serif Variable was a perfect choice for its versatility in typefaces which ensured that my packaging’s text would complement my overall design.
After I finished drawing up my thumbnail sketches, I then choose what design sketch I wanted to go with. After I played around with a few different design ideas and created 2 different rough designs. I then went online and found a free online packaging template I could use for my design. Once I found the right template, I then drafted my initial layout which I refined based on my peer’s feedback.
My final design features a dynamic combination of bright yellow hues which integrated the pineapple graphics as well as incorporates a playful depiction of the Kool-Aid man puckering up to encapsulate the sour sensation.
Overall, this approach didn’t only highlight the products unique flavor but also associated with Kool-Aids brand identity. The overall packaging offers a fresh, bold, and energetic packaging design that respects Kool-Aids brand heritage while appealing to modern taste. ​​​​​​​
